SDG&E signs 26 MW solar energy contract
09. February 2011 | Applications & Installations, Industry & Suppliers | By: Becky StuartSan Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is to purchase 26 megawatts (MW) of energy from a proposed solar facility in California, under a 25 year contract with NRG Solar.
Located in Borrego Springs, California, NRG’s facility is projected to produce enough electricity annually to power over 9,000 homes. If approved by the California Public Utilities Commission, it will be built across 300 acres. Construction is scheduled to begin this year, and should be completed by mid 2012.
According to SDG&E, the project represents the largest photovoltaic contract it has signed for a project sited in its service area. It adds that the system, when complete, will increase the amount of solar power generated in San Diego County by 25 percent.
The 26 MW facility will comprise the fourth solar contract the company has signed in the past nine months. Last year, the company signed three contracts with companies for solar energy to be produced in Imperial Valley.
