With a turnover of USD$1.55 billion, its solar segment grew by an impressive 50.7 percent, in comparison to the previous year. The company’s gross income also increased by 8.6 percent.

In terms of solar cells, Sharp delivered 579 megawatts (MWs) worldwide. It says that by the end of its financial year (March 2011), it expects the total sum to rise to 1,300 MWs.

“Photovoltaics is one of the core business segment for Sharp,” commented Peter Thiele, executive vice president of Sharp Energy Solution Europe. He went on to say that the company is investing heavily in increasing its production capacity and sees Europe as a future solar market.

Having built up capacities in Great Britain and Italy, the company says it is following its “local production for local consumption” strategy. This allows it to avoid exchange rate disadvantages, in addition to reducing transport routes and costs.

It concluded by saying that in terms of competitive advantages, it also sees entrances in established international markets, and in the development of so-called downstream business functions.
