SMA announces further partnership with monitoring firm GreenPowerMonitor

Germany’s SMA has announced this week it is to collaborate once more with Spanish monitoring software company GreenPowerMonitor on the coordinated deployment of PV monitoring systems.

The collaboration revolves around the installation and deployment of the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, which was developed by GreenPowerMonitor to offer flexible data collection, customizable system expandability and secure data archiving.

SMA – which is exploring new revenue streams and business partnerships as it looks to diversify its service in 2015 – sees the SCADA technology as ideally complementary to its own inverter systems, and having worked previously with GreenPowerMonitor believes the time is right to renew acquaintances once more.

"This cooperation with GreenPowerMonitor means that we can better serve our customers in the large-scale power plant segment with coordinated system technology as well as early system valdation and coordinated project development," said Boris Wolff, SMA’s executive VP of the utility business.

"GreenPowerMonitor’s individually customizable systems are the perfect addition to SMA’s PV power plant solutions for professional system management and comprehensive asset management."

Wolff added that the ability to precisely monitor and control energy production – something that SCADA offers – adds to the long-term security of PV investments.

SMA presents global purchasing strategy

Having been forced to make a series of job loss announcements last month, SMA placed its economic situation at the forefront of yesterday’s Suppliers Day, moving to reassure investors that there has been “positive support” from major trade credit insurers during the company’s recent transformation announcements.

"In recent weeks, we have spoken with all of the major trade credit insurance companies about SMA’s restructuring," said SMA CEO Pierre-Pascal Urbon. "All those taking part in the talks have acknowledged SMA’s unique selling propositions in the global PV market and understood the proposed measures."

SMA’s head of global procurement, Mark Grosse, went on to explain the company’s new purchasing strategy, which is set to define SMA’s future in the coming years. This included the role the acquisition of Danfoss will play in volume bundling and new logistics concepts designed to increase flexibility and reduce inventories.

"Thanks to modular design of the new generation of inverters and further standardization measures," said Grosse, "SMA can make optimum use of the global purchasing strategy and achieve volume effects, which will lead to sustainable cost reductions.

"Over the next two years, the partnership with Danfoss offers additional potential savings and material costs." Grosse added that innovations in key technological areas will be promoted in order to achieve these goals, revealing that SMA will try to work even more closely with its suppliers in order to give them more precise demand forecasts.
