SMA will be supplying 700 MW of its central inverters for seven utility-scale projects in California, U.S. San Diego-based EPC Swinerton Renewable Energy has decided on SMA's Sunny Central 2200-US for all of the PV plants it is developing. SMA will deliver 317 inverters to the projects.

The first project, Springbok 1 in Kern County, is already under construction and will have a total capacity of 108 MW. The PV plants under development by Swinerton range between 50 to 150 MW in capacity and are expected to be completed in 2016.

"We are honored to help Swinerton bring such a significant amount of PV to California," said Marko Wittich, SMA executive vice president of sales for the Americas region. "The Sunny Central 2200-US is part of our most technologically advanced central inverter line and will provide the reliability and efficiency that these utility-scale systems require."

SMA's Sunny Central 2200-US has 2,200 kVA of output at 1,000 VDC and has been specifically designed by SMA for the U.S. market. According to SMA, the company has managed to cut down installation and transportation costs by being able to fit up to four inverters in a standard shipping container or on a flat-bed truck.
