Just two weeks after reporting that it had surpassed the 1 GW inverter sale milestone in Japan, SMA says it has repeated the feat in the Indian solar market. It opened a sales and subsidiary service in the country in 2010. Including Australia, this is now the third APEC market where SMA has reached 1 GW in inverter sales.
"The strong growth of the Indian photovoltaic market for SMA is mainly driven by the utility segment," stated John Susa, SMA executive VP sales Asia Pacific, adding, "This is a growing but extremely competitive market with cut-throat pricing, and SMA has been able to differentiate by proving to our long-term Indian partners, leading developers and EPCs, that there are significant performance and financial benefits for adopting SMA inverters in their large-scale PV power plants."
While grid-tied solar PV plants are driving sales, SMA said there is also demand for its stand-alone and PV-diesel-hybrid solutions. pv magazine has contacted the company for more details.
Currently, SMA is the global leader in solar PV inverter sales (and has increased its revenues share this year for the first time since 2010), followed by Switzerlands ABB. Despite this, ABB has already surpassed 2 GW of inverter sales in India, having doubled its installed base in the country in just five months. Overall, it supports half of the countrys total installed solar PV capacity, which is said to be more than 4 GW as of this July.
