Another busy day at SNEC in Shanghai, China, as more products were unveiled, more partnerships strung up, and more trends in the industry detected. Lots of the Chinese PV manufacturers were out in force and making interesting moves in the market.

In today’s update from the tradeshow, new products from Lerri Solar, meteocontrol and the Dow Chemical Company, a significant partnership between Qingdao New Energy Solutions Inc. and Huawei, and some interesting trends in the industry. The Solar Superheroes remained out in force to continue their campaign of returning coal underground.

Snapshots of day two

Chinese PV module manufacturer and subsidiary of Longi, Lerri Solar, unveiled its latest mono-crystalline module, the Hi-MO1. The impressive module has much decreased light induced degradation (LID) that does not go above 1.5% and can, in some instances, be below 1%. The average conversion efficiency for the 300W panel is 18.35%, and while current mass production of the new module is for 290W panels, this is due to increase to 300W panels by the first half of 2017.

Leading PV system monitoring solutions provider meteocontrol announced an updated monitoring system, VCOM, which combines monitoring, data collection and analysis to helps its customers to reduce the cost of O&M and to increase net profit. The new system will be used to service PV installations across meteocontrol’s global reach.

A significant partnership agreement was signed between utility-scale PV developer Qingdao New Energy Solutions Inc. (NESI) and leading global inverter supplier Huawei. As part of the agreement, NESI will use Huawei’s Fusion Solar 3.0 smart PV plant management system in a number of their projects that are in development, with a total capacity of 1 GW. The projects that NESI tends to focus on are often ones that are promoted by the Chinese government.

The Dow Chemical Company unveiled its new POE encapsulant, which has a number of advantages over the widely used PVA film, especially making improvements to the anti-PID performance. Dow has been vocal about its optimism in China’s PV market, and so is eager to expand its POE operations within the country.

The head of PR for Chinese PV manufacturer Zhongli Talesun told pv magazine that the company had installed a very large amount of PV capacity in 2015 and the first half of 2016. She said that the company was less sure about how the market would develop after June 2016, but that they are cautiously optimistic at Talesun for the progression of the Japanese and U.S. markets, although they still firmly believe that China is the key market in the industry.

A general trend that was evident on day two of SNEC was that the mono-crystalline PV product is becoming increasingly popular. Most of the Chinese major module manufacturers have been promoting their mono-module, with more and more using PERC technology. Energy Trend now estimates that by the end of 2016 there will be a total installed capacity of 14 GW of PERC mono PV.
