Residents of five remote villages in Sabah, Malaysia will soon enjoy their first electricity supply. Villages Kuamut, Tundon Bohangin, Lubukan, Tanjung Batu Laut and Tanjung Batu Darat will be supplied with power with a hybrid solar system. The state's Sabah Electricity's deputy chairman Datuk Bung Moktar Radin released a statement saying that the initiative to supply the villagers with power will enhance their current living conditions. Ten more villages in the district are also in the planning stages to be provided with electricity via solar. Details are to be released in the next few days.
The initiatives fall under the new tenth Malaysia Plan. National project leader and chief technical advisor to the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Ahmad Hadri Haris in an interview with pv magazine stated,"Malaysians are ready to embrace solar energy. But as with all renewable energy technologies, the capital investment is high and the public requires continuing government support until such time as grid-parity is achieved. This support will help to levelised energy prices as fossil fuel for energy generation is heavily subsidized by the government".
Sabah is one of the thirteen states of Malaysia, located on the island of Borneo. It is the second largest state after Sarawak.
