Solarcentury to develop 170 MW-AC of solar in Mexico for JinkoSolar

British developer Solarcentury has been chosen by JinkoSolar to develop two solar projects to fulfill JinkoSolar’s commitments under Mexico’s first electricity auction following its energy reform process.

JinkoSolar won contracts for around 170 MW-AC, representing around 10% of the estimated 1.7 GW-AC of solar projects in this auction. Mexico has since made plans for a second electricity auction which will be concluded in late September.

Solarcentury plans to develop the 100 MW-AC Viborillas project in the state of Jalisco, and the 70 MW-AC Cuncunul project in Yucatan. The energy division of JinkoSolar will act as investor and owner of the two solar projects.

JinkoSolar cites Solarcentury’s experience in developing and delivering large-scale projects globally. As a British developer, the company has an unusual presence in a region where large-scale project development has been dominated by Spanish, Italian and U.S. companies.

However, this may be the beginning of a larger presence for Solarcentury, which established a Mexico office in February 2014 and plans to participate in Mexico’s second electricity auction later this year.
