Israeli solar company Solargreen has won the tender to install a 300 kW solar rooftop on the nation's parliament building, the Knesset.

Airport City-based Solargreen will install the NIS1.7 million (US$492,000), 4,650m2 rooftop as part of the Green Knesset project unveiled at the start of the year.

A report in yesterday's Jerusalem Post says the project, which will be complete within a year, will generate 510,000 kWh/year and bring annual energy savings of NIS 200,000.

The Green Knesset project, whose authors claim will make the heart of the Israeli government the ‘greenest parliament building in the world', is aimed at reducing the building's electricity and gas requirements by a third.

The NIS7 million project will see the Knesset's water, air conditioning and lighting systems revamped.

Two electric vehicle charging posts have already been installed, 80% of paper used in the building is recycled and plastic water bottles have largely been replaced with glass pitchers.

Solargreen beat off five rival bidders for the project, according to the Post report.
