SolarWorld begins shipment of PV modules to Stardale project

In order to minimize shipping costs, fuel consumption and noxious emissions, the company says it is sending the modules via rail.

SolarWorld explains that every week, an average of 30 trucks each carrying 540 of its panels – worth around 3.75 megawatts – leave its Hillsboro plant for the Port of Portland’s nearby intermodal facility, where they then transfer to rail.

In total, the company will ship around 144,060 panels, which are expected to generate 39 gigawatt-hours of energy annually.

The Stardale PV Solar Project represents Innergex Renewable Energy Inc.’s first solar undertaking. Prior to the company’s involvement, Enfinity owned and developed the project. It is also currently the project partner for engineering, procurement and construction, as well as operations and maintenance.

Work began on the project back in November, and is expected to conclude by the first quarter of 2012. The total project cost is estimated at CAD$140 million.
