First Solar will construct and supply the Southern Power PV power plant, in Georgia, U.S. Construction will begin in September 2015, with completion set for the end of 2016. 1.6 million modules will be used and mounted on a single-axis tracker system, also supplied by First Solar.

The solar farm will be located in Taylor County, in the interior of the south-eastern state.

"Our strategic solar expansion helps build our system's diverse fuel mix and solar generation capacity to prepare for America's energy future," said Southern Company Chairman, president and CEO Thomas A. Fanning.

Electricity from the power plant will be sold to Cobb EMC, Flint Energies and Sawnee EMC. Cobb will be the off taker of 101 MW of capacity, with Flint and Sawnee each left with around 15 MW. The RECs generated by the project will also go to the energy firms. Both Flint and Cobb are not-for-profit cooperatives.

Southern Power is active in five states across the south of the U.S. and has previously acquired seven solar power plants from Turner Renewable Energy and one from First Solar. Atlanta based Southern Power operates some 46 GW of generating capacity.
