Southern Power acquires controlling interest in SunPower's 102 MW Henrietta solar project

The subsidiary of utility Southern Company owns large portion of the Californian solar plant, which was built and developed by SunPower, which still owns remaining interest in the project.

U.S. solar power developer SunPower confirmed today that Southern Power – a subsidiary of power utility Southern Company – has bought a “controlling interest” in its 102 MW Henrietta solar project located in Kings County, California.

This is the first joint venture between the two firms, with SunPower – which has developed, designed and constructed the solar plant – to hold the remaining interest in the project. Work on the Henrietta solar farm began in June last year and it is expected to be fully operational by Q3 this year.

The site, once complete, will cover 670 acres and is being built as a fully integrated modular solar power block that will deliver enough clean energy to meet the power needs of 24,000 local households.

Electricity generated by the solar plant will be purchased by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PGE) under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA). PGE will also purchase all associated renewable energy credits.

Southern Power is eager to expand its clean energy portfolio, and currently has more than 2.1 GW of renewable generating capacity under its belt, comprising 28 solar, wind and biomass projects. Henrietta will be the firm’s 11th PV acquisition in California alone.
