The €7,000 award went to the project "Sustainable territorial planning for the Campo Dalias Region", submitted by Spanish-born Maria de Mar Gonzales Duenas.

According to president of the Federation of German Architects, and jury chairman, Michael Frielinghaus, the project demonstrates how the use of renewable energies can be a supporting element of holistic planning and strategy for an entire region.

The design concept should be transferable for every city and for any regional planning. The solar technology is said to play a particularly important role, because it is both versatile and modularly constructed, commented Hubert Aulich, CEO of Solarinput and Solarvalley Mittledeutschland.

Second prize was presented to the project, "Facelift, Energetische Sanierung Charlottenhochhaus Stuttgart". Franziska Militz and Carina Steidele from Munich's Technischen Universität received €3,500 for their efforts. Meanwhile, the other nine nominees were recognized for their work, having each received €500.

A total of 41 different designs were submitted to the Bauhaus Solar 2011 Award, with students coming from eight different countries. The prize is presented to those works of architecture and design, which mainly rely on the use of renewable energies.

It is the second time the award has been held. Worth a total of €15,000, Solarinput, Solarvalley Mitteldeutschland, the Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW-Solar) und the European Photovoltaic Association (EPIA) all contributed to it.
