SPI begins construction on 8 MW US solar project

Construction has begun on an eight megawatt (MW) utility-scale solar project, located near Palm Springs, California.

SPI Solar has been contracted to carry out the engineering, procurement and construction of the project by North Palm Springs Investments, LLC. An exclusive 20 year power purchase agreement has been signed with Southern California Edison.

When complete, the Palm Springs solar project will cover an area of 36.5 acres, on two pieces of land, and will comprise around 33,880 solar modules manufactured by LDK on a single-axis tracker system. Overall, the system is expected to generate around 8,000 kilowatt hours of electricity in its first year.

In a statement, SPI CEO, Steve Kircher said that the company was pursuing both utility-scale and distributed generation solar projects across the U.S.

He added: "This week we are attending the Intersolar North America conference in San Francisco where we will be meeting with several prospects interested in developing strategic partnerships with us like the one we recently announced with KDC Solar. We are excited about our pipeline development and the opportunities it represents for our company."
