SunEdison has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Norwegian power producer Statkraft in the U.K.
As part of the deal, Statkraft — which has become a market leading purchaser of independently generated electricity in the U.K. — will buy the energy generated from an 88 MW SunEdison portfolio of six utility-scale PV plants across the country. SunEdison will also provide ongoing management and operations services for the installations.
"The solar market is in an exciting place right now and we are delighted to win SunEdison as a customer,"said Tim Foster, head of Renewable Origination at Statkraft. "The Statkraft team demonstrated our ability to immediately respond to tight customer deadlines which was instrumental in closing this deal. We hope to build a strong partnership with SunEdison into the future."
SunEdison has so far completed construction of a total of eight utility-scale PV installations with a combined capacity of 117 MW throughout the U.K., some of which are understood to make up part of the Statkraft package.
While SunEdison declined to provide further details of its U.K. projects or other possible PPAs, Jose Perez, president of SunEdison Europe, Africa and Latin America, nevertheless added: "We just entered the U.K. solar market this year and have already interconnected eight plants. This is a testament to our ability to enter a new market and efficiently execute projects that add to the company's bottom line."
Perez attributed the company's success to its ability to find "highly-qualified local vendors to partner with. They provide localized expertise while helping us support the local job market."
