Grid Alternatives has introduced solar to many communities in the U.S., on a not-for-profit basis. Its installations bring solar power to less advantaged communities and households and provides valuable solar training for volunteers. Its work in American classrooms will now get a further boost, with SunPower stumping up 1 MW of modules and inverters for Grid Alternatives Solar Futures program.

SunPower has indicated that the partnership will build on the company’s support of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education in schools globally.

"We look forward to working with GRID Alternatives on the Solar Futures program, building on our combined expertise bringing solar from rooftops to classrooms," said SunPower CEO and president Tom Werner.

Grid Alternatives has been operating in Californian schools since 2010 and intends to strengthen its work in the Inland Empire region of California and roll out its program nationally. The Inland Empire is host to a number of PV power plant developments.

"Solar education is a double win," said Tim Sears, co-founder and CFO/COO of Grid Alternatives. "It opens up an exciting career path for students, and helps make young people advocates for renewable energy and energy conservation in their communities.”

SunPower has partnered with Grid Alternatives since 2006 and employees have volunteered on projects with the not-for-profit in the Bay Area. The 1 MW of equipment to be supplied under this latest deal will see a further 300 homes benefit from Grid Alternatives solar program.
