The three-year solar system supply deal signed by U.S. manufacturer SunPower with homebuilder Meritage Homes could amount to thousands of rooftops, according to the builder's vice president of environmental affairs.

C R Herro told the cleantechnica.com website, Meritage, which operates across the western, southern and south-eastern U.S., is building around 7,000 homes per year and around 10% of its customers opt for a solar system, equating to demand for around 2,100 SunPower systems over the course of the three-year deal announced this month.

The announcement of the deal by SunPower stated Meritage was the ninth largest housebuilder in the U.S. and constructed 4,238 homes in 2012 but Herro told cleantechnica it is now the seventh largest and SunPower systems are already being installed in Meritage homes in California.

The deal announcement added SunPower systems would be available to around 200 Meritage Homes communities in the U.S., starting with California, Texas and North Carolina.
