California-based Mitsui subsidiary Sunwize Technologies expects to connect Samoa's largest photovoltaic system later this year.
The San Jose-based company, which installed a 1.8 MW solar system at the airport of neighbouring American Samoa last year, will install a 546 kW solar system across three sites in two of Samoa's islands.
Ground mounted systems will be installed at Salelolaga on Savai'i island and Tanugamanono on Upolu with a third ground mounted system, plus solar canopy, at Vaitele on Upolu.
The project is expected to generate 700,000 kWh per year in a country which generates 60% of its electricity from diesel.
The photovoltaic project, which will have to withstand a highly corrosive ocean air environment and 124 mph typhoon season winds, is being paid for by the Japanese government through the Pacific Environment Community (PEC) fund.
