Swiss battery maker joins Azores grid project

Swiss battery manufacturer Leclanche will supply the 2.8 MW battery energy storage solution that will form a central plank of what is claimed to be ‘the world's first MW-scale renewable energy plus storage system', under development in the Azores.

The system being built by German-U.S. developer Younicos on the Portuguese island of Graciosa will feature 4.5 MW of wind power and 1 MW of solar along with the 2.8 MW lithium-ion battery park which will be fully integrated with the intelligent energy management system being developed by Younicos.

A press release issued by Leclanche on Friday, announcing its participation, added the lack of a conventional thermal engine means the Graciosa grid can be fully powered by wind and solar and claims the project will "set new standards for islands worldwide."

The Graciosa project will take the island's dependency on renewables up to 65 per cent.

Whilst announcing details of the contract win, Leclanche revealed one of its major shareholders, Recharge ApS, will supply €3.5 million ($3.7 million) of convertible financing for the project.

Danish company Recharge this year provided CHF21 million ($21 million) in medium-term financing for Leclanche.
