India-based Tata Steel has announced it will install 80,000 solar PV panels on the roofs of its factory buildings at IJmuiden steelworks, with the help of Pure Energie.
Installation, which is expected to take two years, is scheduled to begin next spring. The generated energy, meanwhile, will be used in the steel manufacturing processes.
Investment will come from Pure Energie, while Tata Power Solar is expected to supply the necessary panels. If the deal goes through, it will represent Tatas biggest international solar project to date.
"This project will further minimise our carbon footprint,2 said Hans Fischer, CTO of Tata Steels European operations, adding, "Since 1990 we have reduced the amount of energy needed to produce steel by more than 30% at our IJmuiden site, which is already one of the worlds most energy-efficient steel plants."
