Only weeks after losing its number one position regarding global module supply to Jinko, Trina Solar has recorded 1 GW of shipments to India. Trina reports that it is the leading crystalline silicon (c-Si) module supplier in India.
Trina began supplying the Indian market in 2010 and says it has supplied a range of project developers, distributors, EPCs and independent power producers (IPP).
"As the upward trend in solar demand continues, India remains one of the most important markets for us in global scale and is an integral part of our expansion strategy in South Asia," said Helena Li, Trina's Regional Head of Asia Pacific and Middle East, in a statement. "1 GW is just a start, and we will continue working diligently to further expand and diversify our client base in the broader region based upon our existing sales network to strengthen our footholds in all segmented markets."
The Indian market has grown sharply in importance for Chinese module suppliers in 2016, particularly as China domestic market softens in the second half of 2016. Mercom Capital forecasts India to surpass 4 GW of new PV installations this year.
Trina is currently exploring the possibility of establishing a manufacturing facility in India, and it has been reported that the Chinese company has signed an MoU to develop a $500 fab in Andhra Pradesh.
U.S. thin film manufacturer and project developer First Solar is well established in India, hitting the 1 GW milestone in March. First Solar has benefitted from a series of U.S. Export-Import bank loans.
