AMS will design, finance, build and operate the battery storage projects, which will be installed at Shell Energy commercial, industrial and utility customer sites throughout California. Shell Energy, meanwhile, will have dispatch rights on capacity for use in planning and market operations.
In a statement released, the two companies have said they will also identify opportunities for new and existing direct access and utility customers looking to install such systems.
No further details on the MOU were provided, such as investment amounts or timelines for the rollout of the projects.
San Francisco-based startup, AMS announced on June 4 a storage deal with Tesla under which it plans to install 500 MWh of Tesla batteries in its energy storage projects. At the time, it said it would sign further battery agreements with other technology providers.
Last November, the company was awarded a 50 MW contract by Southern California Edison (SCE) to develop what it terms the first grid-scale fleet of Hybrid-Electric Buildings in the world, in West Los Angeles.
Under its Hybrid-Electric Building project, AMS aims to deploy energy storage on commercial and industrial buildings, in order to provide large-scale grid support to utilities. Its first 10 MW project is set to be installed in Irvine, California in the fourth quarter of next year.
AMS was founded in 2012 by Susan Kennedy, former chief of staff to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger; and Jackie Pfannenstiel, former Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Energy,Installations & Environment) for President Obama.
