Portuguese solar company Martifer Solar has scored a significant World Cup victory by installing the 1.4 MW rooftop array that will power the first FIFA finals match to be played in a solar-powered stadium.
Martifer says the solar rooftop, which covers more than 85% of the roof of the Estadio Mineirao, in Belo Horizonte, is the country's first operational large scale solar facility.
Whilst Tractebel Energia, developers of the 3 MW Nova Aurora plant which is yet to be officially inaugurated may disagree, what is beyond doubt is the football-related milestone which will see Colombia take on Greece tomorrow in a stadium powered by the sun.
The installation, in the capital city of Minas Gerais state, was developed by Martifer for Companhia Energetica de Minas Gerais (CEMIG), German development bank kfW and Minas Arena as part of the Minas Solar 2014 program.
The Estadio Mineirao will also host the group games between Belgium and Algeria on Tuesday, Argentina and Iran on June 21 and Costa Rica and England on June 24 before a second round game on June 28 and the World Cup's first semi final, on July 8.
