This Wednesday Bolivian President Evo Morales attended the signing of a contract to finance a 50 MW solar PV plant in the Oruro Department, which was announced as the first phase of a 100 MW project.

The first 50 MW will require an investment of US$95.5 million, and Morales noted that the French Development Agency (AFD) awarded $65.5 in credit for the project. Additionally the European Union donated more than $10 million and Bolivia’s National Electric Company (ENDE) will provide $19.5 million.

This first phase will occupy 1.2 square kilometers in the municipality of Carcollo. The plant is expected to generate 106 gigawatt-hours annually.

This 50 MW project was already anticipated by Oruro Governor Víctor Hugo Vásquez last September. Earlier, a 20 MW PV project was announced in Oruro.

In addition to the project in Oruro, a 5 MW project has been announced in the Tarija Department, and a 50 MW project in Potosí. However only one PV project has been realized in Bolivia to date, a 5 MW project in the Pando Department.
