South Africa: Siemens starts work on 100 MW of PV

The two projects were awarded to Globeleq – the majority shareholder in a consortium comprised of Mainstream Renewable Power, Thebe Investment Corporation, engineering firms Enzani Technologies and Usizo Engineering and local community trusts – under South Africa’s Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Program.

Siemens will construct the De Aar farm in Emthanjeni, and the Droogfontein farm near Kimberley, under a lump-sum turnkey EPC contract. Suntech, meanwhile, will deliver the necessary photovoltaic modules. The 100 MWs are expected to be online by mid-2014.

Overall, the consortium will invest €500 million in the two projects. Funding has been received from a syndicate of lenders led by Absa bank and Barclays.
