German photovoltaic manufacturer Solarwatt and auto company BMW have announced their intention for future cooperation. The aim of the just agreed upon partnership is to provide BMW’s customers with complete photovoltaic systems for roofs and carports, manufactured by Solarwatt.

According to BMW, the cooperation – scheduled to coincide with the planned launch of the BMW i3 and BMW i8 – will offer customer-friendly and sustainable options for charging electric vehicles in the garage.

The 360° Electric concept should meet both the qualitative and aesthetic demands of customers, explained project manager Marcus Krieg. In the carport system, for example, Solarwatt uses glass-glass modules for charging the vehicles’ batteries and providing households with solar power. Customers can obtain the systems either when they buy the car, or via the internet.

Solarwatt CEO, Detlef Neuhaus sees in the cooperation a confirmation of the new strategy of the Dresden-based photovoltaic company. "The cooperation with a visionary provider of vehicles and mobility services, shows the great and practical importance of complete photovoltaic systems for the energy supply of the future," he said.

Last June, Solarwatt applied for insolvency at the Dresden district court. Following the application, the company devised a restructuring plan, which was agreed upon by the shareholders and creditors in mod-October. The insolvency proceedings were subsequently terminated; a part of the restructuring was the transformation of the company into a GmbH.

With a 90% stake, the main shareholder of Solarwatt is BMW heir, Stefan Quandt. The remaining shares are held by the MD and equity company, NEI.
