Construction has started on the Dominican Republic's first solar park, which the German developers claim will be the biggest in the Caribbean.

Waghausel-headquartered developer Wirsol is aiming to complete the first, 32 MW, phase of an eventual 64 MW scheme in Monte Plato province by the end of the year.

A Wirsol press release announced the start of works last week and quoted company director Markus Worth, who said Dominican Republic president Danilo Medina Sanchez personally awarded the project to the German company.

Wirsol is using domestic contractors on the project and has set up a Wirsol Caribbean subsidiary to handle future projects in the region.

The Wirsol press release adds the government of the Dominican Republic is offering tax incentives for renewable energy projects.
