Turkey: 20 MW of new licensed PV capacity connects to the grid

Two new solar farms from Turkey's licensed PV market, each totaling 10 MW of installed capacity, have been connected to the grid.

Asunim Turkey, an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm, confirmed the news and told pv magazine the two projects are located in Konya, a city in Turkey’s Central Anatolia region.

The key details are that they belong to the so-called licensed segment of Turkey’s domestic PV market, which concerns projects larger than 1 MW. They were awarded licenses in separate tenders in 2014 and 2015.

To date, Turkey’s PV powerhouse has been the unlicensed segment of the market, which comprises projects smaller than 1 MW. As such, the industry is keen to see some activity in the former.

Andreas Schuenhoff, director of Asunim Group, told pv magazine that the two plants are owned by Turkey’s Akfen Renewable Energies – the renewable energy arm of Turkish construction group, Akfen Holding – which has grown to become a leading player in the country’s licensed market.

The group recently signed a record US$363 million loan with six banks for the development of PV and wind power plants. A spokesperson for the company told pv magazine that it has also been used to finance the two above mentioned projects.
