ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is supplying its inverter solutions to a 70 MW project in South America. The new park is the second-largest of its kind in the entire region. ABB supplied more than 45 of its ULTRA central inverters to the solar power plant. The ULTRA inverters were selected for their robustness and ability to ensure the maximum energy output while operating in one of the harshest, desert environments, notorious for its dust and high heat.

“This installation is the second-largest project of its kind installed in South America,” said Paolo Casini, Vice President Marketing Product Group Solar of ABB’s Power Conversion business unit. “The ABB ULTRA inverter was selected for its ability to deliver high performance under the most extreme desert conditions in addition to its ability to meet the demanding maintenance requirements of the harsh environment. We are very pleased that the ABB ULTRA has been selected as the inverter of choice for this demanding project.”

Apart from the ruggedness of the ABB ULTRA inverter, another key factor that played into the selection of the product was its modularity. The project’s investors were specifically looking for this feature due to the project’s remote location and the need for easily managed maintenance. The local utility also demanded a very strong reactive power control capability – and the ABB ULTRA central inverters were perfectly matched in fulfilling this requirement.

The ABB ULTRA is the largest inverter in the company’s product portfolio. It consists of three models with capacities of 700, 1050 and 1400KW. The combination of their high performance, robustness, high flexibility, and efficiency rates of up to 98.7 percent make the ULTRA ideally suited for large-scale solar power installations.
