Conergy connects further own consumption plants

Just a few weeks after the first pilot project on the roof of the organic restaurant La Sal Varador on the beach in Barcelona, Conergy is connecting two further solar power plants in the province of Huesca in northern Spain, which will be cost-effective without any solar subsidies thanks to high levels of own consumption.

In collaboration with its installation partner Electrobin, the system supplier set up the first 10 kilowatt solar plant on the roof of the premises of Agustin Castán, a manufacturer of prefabricated concrete parts for agricultural use in Castejón del Puente. The second installation with a capacity of 5 kilowatt is located on a single-family house in the town of Monzón.

The two power plants will be producing around 22,500 kilowatt hours of clean solar energy per year, providing both the local entrepreneur and the private plant owner with over 30% savings on their electricity bills.

“These projects illustrate once again the huge potential of roof-top solar plants,” said Luis Jiménez Gutierrez, Managing Director of Conergy Spain. “Solar power is already competitive in Spain today without any subsidies. Thanks to the excellent climatic conditions and high electricity prices, grid parity is already a reality here, both in the commercial and the private sector. Solar energy is the right solution particularly for businesses and companies that consume most energy in the daytime, but also for private households. With a solar plant of their own, they become more independent of rising electricity prices, reduce their energy costs considerably while making an important contribution to environmental protection.”

“In times of grid parity, two factors play an important role: the appropriate sizing of the own consumption plant and the quality of the components,” said Raul Bercero, Managing Director of Electrobin Renewable. “Unlike in the past, the main objective is no longer for the plant to be as large as possible but for it to be matched as precisely as possible to the customers and their consumption pattern so that they can use as much of the generated solar power as possible. During our 25 years of experience in the electrical sector, we have always been guided by two principles: adapt to the needs of our customers and offer the highest quality solutions for their satisfaction. Conergy offers efficient solutions which our experienced technical department adapts to the peculiarities of each project."

Supported by Conergy’s solar experts, Electrobin engineers took several months studying the consumption pattern of various customers in order to develop a joint model for future projects in 2013. The first result of this collaborative work is the installation of these two solar power plants in Huesca. Both will ensure the largest possible share of own consumption and therefore energy cost savings for the customers.

The business and the family will be consuming themselves over 95% of the solar electricity, which the 76 Conergy PowerPlus modules will produce each day. As a result, they will need virtually no electricity from the grid during the day and actually cover up to 35% of their overall energy requirement. The prime cost for the solar electricity from the roof-top plants is around 10 euro cents per kilowatt hour (leveraged cost of electricity calculation, assumed operational life: 25 years).

The prices that the business and the household have to pay for electricity from the grid during daytime and at today’s tariffs amount to about 15 euro cents per kilowatt hour. This means that their own power plant on the roof will leave the customers better off by 5 euro cents per used kilowatt hour of solar power, resulting in cost savings of up to 30% or more for their overall electricity consumption.
