Energy Storage Systems, Inc. (ESS), a leading manufacturer of safe, low cost, and long cycle-life flow batteries for long duration storage applications including microgrids and time-shifting renewable energy resources, will be showcasing their All-Iron Flow Battery (IFB) system at Intersolar North America (booth #8158). ESS' long duration (6+ hour) flow battery provides an innovative solution to a growing number of challenges on either side of the utility meter. As part of the Intersolar exhibition, CEO Craig Evans will be giving a presentation on flow battery applications, Thursday July 14th at 12:30pm.

Attendees can tour the ESS IFB solution within an advanced microgrid at Stone Edge Farm Winery, Friday July 15th. This innovative installation demonstrates how energy storage can enable net zero, with intermittent renewables and high efficiency combined heat and power. "Stone Edge and its team of engineers are researching how solar, hydrogen, micro turbine CHP, battery storage, and electronic controls technology can make us self-sufficient in supplying our energy needs," said Craig Wooster, Microgrid Project Manager at SEF. "We were extremely impressed with the turnkey IFB system being fully operational within a day and a half of connection to the microgrid."

The IFB system installed at Stone Edge Farm has a 60kWh energy capacity with a 10kW, 480VAC, 3-phase interface. Self-contained in a 20′ ISO shipping container, the IFB was easily sited in an environmentally sensitive area, given its small footprint and non-toxic, non-flammable chemistry. ESS' Flow Battery supports the requirements of the microgrid to supply power at night, for irrigation or hydrogen generation, and to smooth out intermittencies of solar on the microgrid.

"We are excited about the remarkable advantages of the simple and elegant electrolyte chemistry in our all iron flow battery," said Craig Evans, CEO of ESS. "The IFB leads competitive technologies in low cost per kWh, maintaining capacity and performance for 10,000+ cycles, and with an environmentally friendly electrolyte delivering a 20-plus year system life, turn-key installation, and fast electrical response time".

ESS is taking orders for their IFB for commercial, utility, and military customers and is ramping to volume production of the 100kW/800kWh, a larger IFB system that will address both behind-the-meter, and front of the meter utility scale multi-MWh applications.
