New US project accomplished by Onyx Solar

This custom solution overhangs a balcony in the Commons building and consists of two types of UL certified semi-transparent photovoltaic glasses designed to meet the building committee’s architectural, sustainability and energy conservation requirements. The BIPV system will generate 4.8 kWh power per year and avoid 2.56 tons of CO2 emissions.

Arcadia University, a private academic institution founded in 1853, takes pride in the campus’ rich medieval architecture, and all new design elements were required to complement the campus’ traditional spirit. The Commons is a 62,000 sq. ft. “family room” with conference rooms, a game room, art gallery, snack bar and multi-functional rooms for its 4,000 students, faculty, staff and alumni to enjoy year round 24 hours a day.

The building was officially inaugurated and opened for use in late January. The energy savings gained from Onyx Solar’s photovoltaic solution will help the university contain energy costs without sacrificing the students’ academic on-campus experience.

This accomplishment immediately follows another recently completed project – a BIPV Canopy for a San Francisco BART station – and confirms the United States as a major market for Onyx Solar.
