"We're absolutely thrilled that, Frank Gehry, who is probably the best architect in the world, chose us to be a part of such a land-mark project. It's good to know a high-profile client like this is contracting a local company to work with his team," says Jim Backman, Adroit Solar's CEO.

Frank Gehry’s designs include the Guggenheim Museum and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The residence is a LEED platinum design.

According to Backman, Adroit Solar will engineer and install a cutting edge system to heat and cool the home. The system will include ground source geothermal heat pumps – a technology with an efficiency of up to 400%. Basically, the water used to heat and cool the home is piped into the earth using boreholes or trenches, using 75% of the energy required to heat and cool from the earth itself.

Along with the geothermal ground source heat pump system, Gehry Partners also contracted the San Diego company to include a solar hot water system and a solar pool heating system in the design.

The project will be the first design of its kind in Santa Monica, and part of the Progressive Sustainability Movement. If it lines up with the rest of Gehry Partners historic designs, the home is said to become an icon for the next generation of solar residential designs.
