J.v.G. Thoma presents new special coating for Desert modules HPTP process (high power temperature process).

The Solar Technology company J.v.G. Thoma presents a further innovation: The high power and especially mad for sand storm temperature process “Desert Module,” unique worldwide, will now become even more resistant through a highly resistant special coating. Even extremely strong sand storms will be unable to counter the Desert Module. Not only the glass surfaces are coated, but also the aluminium frame and the connection boxes.

Thus, the “Desert Modules” of the Bavarian solar specialist are even suitable for extremely hot, stormy regions, which had not been considered for obtaining solar energy until now. The new coating has successfully passed intensive tests in the company’s own research department and external strongest automotive tests. The first user in practice is Jurawatt GmbH. They have already assumed production of the module, suitable for the desert.

Nature as a model

J.v.G. Thoma promotes bionics for photo voltaic systems The basis for the protective coating is a completely new type of NANO coating, which, by the way, does not just protect from external influences but also prevents soiling. This NANO was recreated from nature. “Nature surprises and fascinates us time and again through its ingenious resourcefulness. Bionics means: Learning from nature. And that’s where we are still right at the beginning with photovoltaic systems,” explains Hans Thoma, General Manager of the Thoma Group. A downstream burning process ensures that the coating is still effective even after ten years. J.v.G. Thoma also now offers another cooling system using heat exchangers, so that the modules can be operated at a temperature that remains the same (approx. 15-25 degrees centigrade) in the best possible environment.

A further positive side effect: These PV systems offer more electricity and “live” considerably longer than comparable systems. Internal and external tests showed, that aflter 10 years the coating is still 99.5 % existing.

Sand storms and their consequences

Sand storms occur in all desert areas - and each one is known differently: in the Central Asian steppe and desert they are known as buran, chamsin or also khamsin in the Nile region. In Israel/Palestine they are called ghibli or gibli; in Tunisia and Libya people talk of the samum, and in the Northern African region, the scirocco. Experts estimate, that in 2004, about 2-3 billion tons of sand was moved due to sand storms. Sometimes the sand even reaches our region. If car roofs suddenly shine red after it rains or sunsets suddenly appear bright red, sand from the Sahara could be the reason.
