The project at Porogi in the Vinnytsia region of southern Ukraine, is the first to be funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), via its Ukraine Sustainable Energy Lending Facility (USELF).
The Porogi solar park, to be comprised of 18,300 photovoltaic modules over 10 hectares, is being developed by Rengy Developments, a group of investors and developers working on renewable energy projects in Eastern Europe, currently in the Ukraine and Armenia.
Rengy is planning several solar projects in southern Ukraine, totaling 50 MW of capacity in line with the government's aim of having 10% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030 some 5 GW to 7 GW, excluding large hydro.
Southern Ukraine benefits from almost twice as much solar irradiation as the north of the country. The Ukraine 2012 report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported a total installed solar capacity in the country of 188 MW in 2011, with 185 MW being installed in that year.
The IEA figures outline a projected annual photovoltaic generation figure of 0.3 TWh by 2015, rising to 2.6 TWh by 2030, in line with the Ukraine government's Updated Energy Strategy of Ukraine to 2030 report.
