NTPC seeks to add another 100 MW of PV power to reach its 10,000 MW by 2020 renewable energy goal.

The conglomerate has invited global bids for its 100 MW solar PV project in the northeastern state of Uttar Pradesh. The state government, according to local media "The Economic Times of India," has plans to lease out 750 hectares of state land to NTPC on a nominal rent fee for solar PV development.

NTPC has been appointed by the government to act as the nodal agency for the implementation of solar projects under the National Solar Mission. The target of 15,000 MW under Batch II of Phase II will take place in three tranches as Bridge to India explains.

  • Tranche-I (including the 1,000 MW “December tranche”): 3,000 MW through bundling mechanism, with 1,500 MW of unallocated coal power from 2014-17
  • Tranche-II: 5,000 MW possibly via an interest rate subsidy from 2015-18
  • Tranche-III: 7,000 MW possibly via solar parks (land and transmission infrastructure) from 2016-19.

Earlier this year, NTPC invited bids for a 500 MW solar PV development project in Andhra Pradesh. The development encompassed four blocks of 125 MW of PV projects each. In May, it was announced that four companies, Tata Power Solar Systems Limited, BHEL, Sterling Wilson and Lanco Solar Energy won the EPC contracts for one 250 MW block with Tata winning 100 MW and the others 50 MW each.
