German smart energy storage specialist sonnen is expanding its operations in the United States, where it’s partnering with leading PV manufacturer SolarWorld and residential roofing company PetersenDean on a new solar-plus-storage package aimed at residential buyers.

The company, previously known as Sonnenbatterie, has also opened a new office in Los Angeles, bolstering its presence in the market. sonnen already operates a manufacturing site in California and an R&D facility in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Bavaria-based company is likewise partnering with residential solar and efficiency financing group Spruce to develop financing models for residential energy storage.

“Finding the right partners is the key to creating innovative products and cost-effectively delivering clean energy technology to the market," said .Boris von Bormann, CEO of Los Angeles-based sonnen Inc. "We are very pleased to have best-in-class partners like SolarWorld, PetersenDean and Spruce, which recognize the immense importance of increasing the availability and adoption of renewable energy in the U.S.”

The all-in-one storage-plus-solar system uses the company’s sonnenBatterie eco storage system, which sonnen says can help customers save on costs through better energy management and provide backup power in the event of grid outages and the capability to go off-grid.

Ardes Johnson, SolarWorld’s U.S. VP of sales and marketing, said the company selected sonnen as an energy storage partner “because of their proven reliability and global record of success and innovation.”

Johnson added that U.S. residential solar was a growing industry and offering customers the capability to store solar power would bolster that growth.

Meanwhile, Spruce recently evaluated the sonnenBatterie products and added sonnen to its approved manufacturer list. The companies are developing financing purely focused on residential electricity storage and plan to make it available to sonnen’s partners in the first quarter of 2016.

Sonnen has already partnered with more than 30 local solar installation companies in the U.S. and it is expanding its partner base throughout the country this year.

The company began delivering the first generation of its sonnenBatterie smart storage system in 2011 and has since installed some 10,000 storage solutions throughout Europe.
