The Department of Environment, Energy and Sustainable Development of the northern Italian region of Lombardy has announced it will award another €4.4 million in rebates to support the adoption of storage systems coupled with residential and commercial PV.
The funds will be allocated for the next two years, with a window for filing requests each year. “This is the third edition of the program,” a regional government announcement stated. “It is aimed at private citizens living in Lombardy who have already installed a photovoltaic system or who intend to buy it integrated with a storage system.”
Projects built under the program will keep the option of selling surplus power to the grid under Italian net metering scheme the scambio sul posto. However, storing excess power is recommended by the regional government as the most cost-effective option.

Last year the government of Lombardy earmarked €3 million for storage incentives and in the previous two years the budget was €4 million and €2 million, respectively.
The scheme funds rebates of up to €3,000 to cover up to half the cost of buying and installing storage systems. Only storage projects combined with PV installations with a generation capacity no larger than 20 kW will be eligible for support from the program.
The Lombardy government is providing rebates only on electrochemical and mechanical storage technologies and is authorizing only systems that are connected in accordance with the CEI 0-21 standard.
