Striving for Sustainable Solar: Reducing environmental impacts at the module level

While it’s true that almost every relevant solar module manufacturer is making a significant effort to become more sustainable in their manufacturing, modules are still exempt from the various regulations on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (ROHS), which are in place to limit the potentially negative environmental impacts of electronics in both operations and end-of-life.

In pursuit of sustainability and environmental stewardship, REC has developed a version of its popular Alpha Series modules, the REC Alpha Pure, a lead-free module with a gapless Twin cell layout, high power density and a compact form factor. The REC Alpha Pure is among the first ROHS-compliant solar modules to hit the market.

With e-waste rapidly becoming a paramount issue of the future, ensuring that one’s products are sourced and manufactured in an environmentally-friendly way is critical. The REC Alpha Pure marks an important advancement on sustainability in solar and enables consumers to make an even greater positive environmental contribution.

Neil Edwards, Senior Technical Communications Manager | REC Group

With a background in industrial electronics, Neil Edwards has over 12 years of experience working in the renewable energy sector. Over the last 10 years at REC, he has been a key interface between the development and global sales sides of projects, having been responsible for product management, product training and leading the commercialization of numerous solar modules, as well as developing the internal and external customer product communications strategy for REC.

George McClellan, Senior Technical Sales Manager | REC Group

George McClellan has been working in Solar PV since 2004. He is based out of San Luis Obispo, CA, and works with the US and Global Sales Teams and customers in product development, technical support and training. George came to REC in 2009 from Advent Solar in New Mexico, where he started his solar PV career as Product Manager and Director of Module Manufacturing. Prior to the solar industry George worked at Intel Corporation and Sandia National labs in Silicon and Compound Semiconductor Process and Technology Development.

Tristan Erion-Lorico, Head of PV Module Business | PV Evolution Labs (PVEL)

Tristan Erion-Lorico has over 15 years of solar and electrical industry experience that spans manufacturing, testing, project development and operations and maintenance. As head of PV module business at PV Evolution Labs (PVEL), Tristan collaborates with PV module buyers, investors and manufacturers to develop innovative test programs for product qualification.
