Chinese inverter and battery manufacturer Hoymiles has unveiled a hybrid battery series for residential applications.

“The series features Hoymiles first hybrid model HiBattery 4020 X which is directly connected to PV modules, and the AC-coupled model HiBattery 4020 AC which is paired with existing home solar system to add the storage function,” the company said in a statement.

The HiBattery 4020 AC provides a base capacity of 1.92 kWh using LiFePO₄ cells rated for over 6,000 cycles. The system is modular and can scale from two units (3.84 kWh) up to six units (11.52 kWh), with total output capacity reaching up to 6 kW depending on configuration. Each unit delivers up to 800 VA AC output, supporting applications such as self-consumption optimization and partial home backup.

The system reportedly achieves up to 96.5% bidirectional efficiency and around 86% AC round-trip efficiency. Safety is ensured through automotive-grade LiFePO₄ cells rated for over 6,000 cycles, a 48-layer BMS, dual MCU protection, and environmental stress testing for heat, humidity, and vibration. It operates at below 17 dB, enabling near-silent indoor use.

The HiBattery 4020 X is a modular plug-in storage system with a base capacity of around 4 kWh, or approximately 3.84 kWh with two units, using LiFePO₄ cells rated for over 6,000 cycles. It is scalable by adding up to six units for a maximum expandable capacity of 11.52 kWh, with system output reaching up to 6 kW depending on configuration.

Each unit provides around 800 VA AC output, supporting flexible use cases from self-consumption optimisation to partial home backup, and can be integrated with smart meters for energy management and zero-export control.

“Both models feature a 4 kWh battery capacity, expandable up to 16 kWh with extra modular battery stacks,” the manufacturer stated. “They come with a built-in 2500 W inverter for efficient power conversion.”

The HiBattery 4020 Series uses Hoymiles’ AI-EMS, powered by a 30M-parameter model, to continuously optimise energy use. Every three hours, AI-TOU adjusts charging and discharging based on prices, weather, and household demand. An Energy Ledger provides real-time tracking of usage and savings. Safety is ensured via hardware protections including fire suppression, overheat control, and self-heating for operation from -20 C to 55°C. The systems are IP66-rated.
