PV on the northern roof – a proposition for the cold season

The heating season is about to start in the northern hemisphere. And that puts a rather odd proposition on the table. Adding solar modules to the northern face of the roof, in addition to a southern roof utilization can generate enough power during the heating season to use a solar-powered heat pump, without being too dependent on grid power.

The idea is that by oversizing the generator on the northern side, there will be little excess production on days with lots of direct light content, as would be the case during the summer months. But on overcast days, as they are common during the cold season, diffuse light content could be picked up on the north and south, equally, generating enough power for heating also during the winter months.

In this pv magazine Webinar, Andrea Polini, Product Manager Hybrid and ESS distribution at Sungrow will show a range of case studies exemplifying when and where it makes sense to also utilize the northern side of the roof. We will discuss the sizing of the generator and run through a few examples of such installations in Europe, analyzing the costs in each region and for each use-case.

Ramping up rooftop utilization and depending on the rooftop solar power for heating makes storage a more viable proposition, as well. Hence Andrea will also demonstrate how the economics of residential storage systems change when they are also being utilized for space heating and cooling. In this vein, we will also take a little tour of batteries’ longevity and warranty terms.
