Applications & Installations
Among energy technologies, solar is unique in its flexibility and range of applications. Rapidly growing niches including floating PV and agrivoltaics are proving their worth alongside the more established rooftop and ground mount market segments.
Hybrid systems combining solar with energy storage and other generation technologies are also becoming more common, in the pursuit of 24/7 emissions free energy. And this brings our industry into more frequent contact with other concerns, that need to be carefully managed.

Ireland’s leap of faith to power data centers
Under Ireland’s Large Energy User Action Plan (LEAP), 10 MW-plus data centers must provide at least 80% of their energy demand through new onsite renewable energy generation and storage. But whether data centers can meaningfully contribute to Ireland’s decarbonization depends on the success of its grid buildout, reports Blathnaid O’Dea.

India tenders 700 MW of solar capacity for C&I offtake
Solar Energy Corp. of India (SECI) has launched a tender for 700 MW of interstate transmission system (ISTS)-connected solar PV projects in special economic zones (SEZs) or areas designated as export-oriented units (EOUs) in India, with the electricity earmarked for a commercial and industrial (C&I) consumer in Odisha.
Mongolia completes first renewable energy auction
The auction procured 220 MW of solar and 135 MW/440 MWh of battery energy storage across five projects. A second auction, covering renewable energy projects with a stabilisation solution in Mongolia’s Gobi region, is scheduled to take place on September 11.
Solar’s infrastructure obstacle
During the development of a recent utility-scale project in Texas’ ERCOT grid interconnection zone, Levona Renewables CEO Fernando Queiroz found his team spending more time evaluating transmission infrastructure, interconnection requirements, equipment availability, and utility procurement processes than discussing solar modules – a striking realization affecting project developers in the United States and beyond.
El Niño transition and a subtropical shift reshape Asia’s summer solar resource
In a new weekly update for pv magazine, Solcast, a DNV company, reports that Summer 2026 brought sharply contrasting solar conditions across Asia, as a northward-shifted Western Pacific Subtropical High reduced irradiance in Northeast China while boosting it across central China. Farther south, developing El Niño conditions and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole suppressed cloud across eastern Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, driving irradiance up to 25% above average.

Irish electricity generation by grid-scale PV up 51% in 2025
Grid-scale solar farms generated 1.1 GWh of electricity in 2025, 4% of the total and a 51% increase compared with 2024. Electricity storage output from pumped hydro and batteries contributed a small share. Coal fired power plant generation, meanwhile, decreased its share by 52% from 2024.
Researchers use virtual reality to increase understanding of agrivoltaics
Research from Denmark finds using immersive virtual reality can help citizens understand the dual-use logic of agrivoltaics. Participants in the research evaluated agrivoltaics as greener, more innovative and at least as acceptable as conventional solar parks.

Two years at 5,200 meters: POWEROAD BESS proven in extreme altitude
At 5,200 meters above sea level, where extreme weather, unstable grid conditions, and limited site access make energy reliability a constant challenge, POWEROAD has achieved more than 800 days of stable operation for its Everest Base Camp energy storage project.

AC-Coupled vs. DC-Coupled
Growing applications for battery storage mean the optimal system design may not be the most obvious. Jakir Hossain and Mujtaba Abdelwahab of Storlytics Energy Storage present a simulation-based comparison of AC vs. DC coupling showing how realistic dispatch modeling rather than generic assumptions fundamentally changes BESS sizing, levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) outcomes and architecture selection.
How to protect solar assets from wildfires
The number of forest fires across Europe is rising. Countries in Central and Northern Europe are also increasingly affected. This article presents a range of preventive measures to protect photovoltaic systems from fire and reports on experiences in France.
