Correction: An earlier version of this article put the rooftop solar capacity of New York City at 4.7 GW. Since the publication of that article Mapdwell updated their estimate, and this article has been changed to reflect the new figure.

The producer of a U.S. solar rooftop mapping tool says there is more than 11 GW of potential generating capacity across more than a million buildings it evaluated in the five boroughs of New York City.

Boston-based start-up Mapdwell launched its Solar System New York online mapping system today (Friday) with information about solar rooftop potential for more than eight million New Yorkers.

In a launch announcement run by Globenewswire.com, Mapdwell CEO Eduardo Berlin claimed the rooftop potential of the city added up to $18 billion of local business.

The company's Solar System tool, developed by its team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and already rolled out in Cambridge, Boston and Wellfleet in its home state as well as Washington DC; Boulder, Colorado; and Washington County, Oregon, offers homeowners a cost-benefit analysis for their rooftop as well as a crowdsourcing funding model for community solar schemes.

The tool also connects homeowners with nearby installers, allowing shared access of the rooftop analysis.
