15 MW PV plant planned for Mauritania

The plant will be located next to a university in Nouakchott, which is currently under construction. In addition to generating energy, it will also be used to learn about solar in Mauritania, said Masdar. Government-owned utility Société Mauritanienne de l’électricité will own and operate the plant, when complete.

Masdar explained that Mauritania has just 144 MW of installed electricity for its around 3 million population, meaning there are "severe" energy shortages. "[Mauritania] has significant untapped renewable energy potential in the form of both solar and wind. In fact, the country’s wind energy potential is almost four times its annual energy demand," said the company in a statement released.

"With the demand for energy rapidly increasing – especially in the developing world – tapping into renewable energy is critical," added Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Masdar CEO. "The integration of wind, solar and hydro power helps to reduce the strain on our natural resources and serves as a bridge to energy security and economic development opportunities."

No further information was released and Masdar could not be immediately reached for comment.
