Work continues on the biggest PV plant in Belarus

In August 2013, Belarusian energy group Belorusneft announced its plans to build a PV solar farm in the Rechitsa district. Initially, the plant was expected to reach 50 MW capacity, with construction originally due to begin in 2013. These plans, however, were postponed.

Today, it appears that the Belarusian oil company has not given up on its solar project after all. The German-based meteocontrol GmbH were selected to produce yield reports for a planned PV park in Rechytsa. To help the energy supplier objectively assess bids submitted in the contract-awarding process, meteocontrol will evaluate the choice of components for modules and inverters as well as the planned configuration of the PV farm.

"The irradiance at the Rechytsa site is roughly comparable with southern Germany’s," said Managing Director of meteocontrol Robert Pfatischer. "However, we have to expect greater yield losses due to snow."

According to the announcement by meteocontrol, the Belorussian solar farm is expected to reach the capacity of 55 MW. Six companies have submitted bids for the EPC contract.

Meanwhile, the Slovenian PV module maker BISOL Group said last week that it had been selected by Belarusian oil company Belorusneft to install a 58 MW solar power plant in the southern part of the country. Despite the slight difference in the announced capacity of the plant, there is no doubt that both meteocontrol and BISOL are to work on the same project in Belarus.

Even if it had been kept at 50 MW capacity, the PV farm in Rechitsa would be the biggest solar project in Belarus. To date, the largest operating PV plant in the country, also built by Belorusneft, has a capacity of 3.75 MW.
