Yesterday Yaskawa Electric Corporation announced that it has established a solar manufacturing plant and a sales and service office in São Paulo, Brazil, to support expanded involvement in the Latin American solar market.
Yaskawa bought Massachusetts-based inverter maker Solectria in 2014. The company plans to initially produce three-phase central inverters in unused space at the its Brazil headquarters in São Paulo, which it moved to in 2012.
The Yaskawa Brazil campus includes 5,200 square meters of manufacturing space, where the company currently produces drives, industrial robots and other products.
Yaskawa-Solectria says that it is still completing the plant for inverter manufacturing and has declined to say when it expects production to begin, but plans for manufacturing to be fully ramped by the end of 2016.
The company plans to make its PVI, SGI, SGI and SGI XT and XTM series inverters at the factory. The PVI ranges from 50-100 kW, and the various SGI series range from 225 kW to multiple MW. Yaskawa-Solectria states that it is not sure whether or not it will produce string combiners, but that it intends to make all future products that are announced at the location.
When fully ramped, the factory will have the capacity to produce 500 MW of inverters annually, and its products will be destined for Central and South American markets.
