The project combines a dedicated 7.1 MWp PV plant, 20 MWh of battery storage and a 2.5 MW electrolyzer for green hydrogen production. Solar electricity supplies the electrolyzer directly when available, while surplus generation is stored in the batteries for later use.

Unlike standalone storage projects targeting electricity trading, the BESS is intended exclusively to support hydrogen production, extending the availability of solar power beyond daylight generation hours.

The storage system is specified to deliver 2.5 MW at 20 kV and is being integrated into the site’s internal electrical network. Its energy management system covers the batteries, power conversion system, transformer and safety equipment, including thermal management and fire protection.

The electrolyzer is designed to produce 500 Nm³ of hydrogen per hour at 30 bar and 99.999% purity, supporting tanker loading and vehicle refuelling. Cerichem has previously stated a target of around 200 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

Located at the former Cerignola interport, the project is supported by Italy’s PNRR Hydrogen Valley programme, with €9.86 million in approved public funding.

At the project’s presentation in 2024, Antonio Candeliere, sole director of Cerichem Biopharm, described the development as “very ambitious” and said it aimed to create “synergy with all the players in the area.” His comments were translated from Italian.
