Filling Europe’s BESS service gap: how a Belgian team is building a local after-sales layer for storage manufacturers
As battery energy storage deployment accelerates across the Benelux, a gap is opening between the systems arriving on European sites and the local expertise available to commission, maintain and repair them. A new Belgium-based venture, BessRe, is positioning itself to close it.
Launched in 2025 and based in Leuven, BessRe offers after-sales and operations & maintenance (O&M) services for commercial, industrial and utility-scale container BESS in the Benelux — with a specific focus on serving the manufacturers now shipping large volumes of storage hardware into Europe from abroad. Its service scope spans commissioning, preventive and corrective maintenance, 24/7 on-site and remote support, and full-cycle reverse logistics, RMA and repair.
The proposition rests on a simple observation about the market’s growth. Belgium alone has more than 850 MW of battery storage in operation and a development pipeline exceeding 2,500 MW, with roughly 4 GW expected by 2030, supported by a mature capacity remuneration mechanism and a ten-year grid-fee exemption for transmission-connected assets. The Netherlands, though slowed by high grid tariffs, carries a pipeline of around 2 GW, with grid operator TenneT projecting some 5 GW of standalone storage by 2030. Every megawatt in those pipelines, BessRe argues, carries a 10-to-15-year service tail that the original manufacturer is often ill-equipped to deliver locally.
“European buyers no longer evaluate storage on price and datasheet alone,” says Liang Sun, co-founder of BessRe. “They increasingly ask who will commission the system, who holds the O&M data, and who stands behind the warranty on European soil. For a manufacturer shipping from thousands of kilometers away, that local layer is the hardest thing to provide — and it’s exactly what we do.”
WHY AFTER-SALES IS BECOMING A PROCUREMENT CRITERION
The timing is not accidental. A tightening EU regulatory environment — from funding restrictions on projects using certain non-EU power conversion systems, to the cybersecurity provisions advancing under CSA2 and the obligations of the EU Batteries Regulation — is pushing European buyers and developers to scrutinize not just where a product is made, but who services it and where the operational data resides.
That shift, BessRe’s founders argue, turns local service from a cost line into a competitive and compliance asset. “In tenders across the Benelux, local service coverage is now scored alongside price, not below it,” says Sun. “A bid without a credible local SLA loses points before the technical evaluation even begins.”
The team’s answer is to operate as an invisible extension of the manufacturer’s own organization. Rather than imposing its own brand at the customer’s site, BessRe integrates into the manufacturer’s ticketing systems, service procedures, warranty workflows and reporting formats — so that European end-customers experience seamless service under the manufacturer’s name, while the manufacturer avoids building country-specific operations from scratch.
FIELD-PROVEN EXPERIENCE
While BessRe itself is a new brand, the team behind it is not new to the field. Its engineers have collectively supported the commissioning, troubleshooting and repair of more than 700 MW / 1,460 MWh of renewable and storage installations across Europe, and manage over 200 MW of solar and BESS assets under O&M. The engineering team holds BA4/BA5 high-voltage qualifications, VCA safety certification and ITC Level-1 thermography credentials, alongside manufacturer-specific certifications and ADR-compliant battery logistics capability.
“The value in storage O&M is rarely in dramatic interventions,” says Tom Damman, co-founder, who has been active in the sector since 2007. “It’s in disciplined, scheduled work — thermal inspections, torque checks, firmware campaigns — that means the expensive failure never happens. A 0.3-degree temperature difference on a busbar is something a dashboard will never flag, but a technician standing in front of the cabinet will.”
Operating from a base near the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam, the company emphasizes rapid response and spare-parts availability, with warehousing that can scale to 1,500 m² indoors and 2,500 m² of secured outdoor storage. “Storage is not solar,” notes co-founder Arne Wouters, who led engineering on one of Europe’s largest single-roof PV systems. “It demands genuine 24/7 response capability and component-level repair competence. That’s a different discipline, and it’s the one we’ve built around.”
A LIFECYCLE VIEW — INCLUDING END OF LIFE
The company’s name reflects an ambition that extends beyond the warranty period. The “Re” in BessRe, the founders explain, stands for Repair, Reverse logistics and Recycle — a deliberate
nod to the full lifecycle of a battery asset, including the end-of-life obligations that the EU Batteries Regulation, with its Extended Producer Responsibility rules and forthcoming digital battery passport, is now making unavoidable for anyone placing storage on the European market.
For manufacturers weighing how to build a durable European service presence without the cost and complexity of doing it alone, BessRe is betting that a local, certified, compliance-ready partner is becoming less of a convenience and more of a prerequisite.
