Air Liquide and Sasol have signed new power purchase agreements (PPAs) with South Africa’s Enel Green Power RSA. The two companies have entered into four PPAs since the start of 2023 and are now set to supply around 690 MW of renewables to Sasol’s site in Secunda, South Africa.
Instead of using its abundant cheap renewable energy potential to generate the gas simply to feed the appetite of industrial consumers in Europe and elsewhere, Africa could attract the heavy manufacturing sectors concerned, such as steelmakers, to its shores, the African Energy Week event heard.
Plus, as the European Commission prepares to present its ‘Fit for 55’ climate change package tomorrow, European companies are continuing to develop hydrogen plans, including Shell in Norway and Siemens in Germany.
Sasol plans to power its operations in the municipalities of Secunda and Sasolburg with two 10 MW solar projects. The successful bidders with sell power to the factories under power purchase agreements.
