Calcium metal battery capable of more than 500 cycles

Researchers at Tohoku University in Japan have developed a prototype calcium battery with a long cycle life of more than 500 charge-discharge cycles. The battery was developed using a hydride-based electrolyte and copper sulfide nanoparticle/carbon composite cathode.

Hold your breath for a better battery

Recent research has revealed a previously underestimated role for oxygen in limiting the performance of lithium-ion batteries. Newly published research from both Japan and the United States has sought to look deeper into the chemical reactions at the heart of lithium-ion storage; and to better characterize the cumulative effects that minuscule amounts of oxygen released during these reactions can have on battery performance and safety.

New pathways for tin-monosulfide PV

Scientists in Japan have developed a new process for the fabrication of crystalline tin monosulfide (SnS). By facilitating the growth of crystals measuring up to 24mm in diameter, the process could help overcome some of the challenges to squeezing higher efficiencies out of this cheap, abundant material.
